💜 What is Aurora Opal?
These opals are the world’s first examples of homogeneously crystallized opals, also known as colloidal or photonic crystals.
This type of lab created opals shows an intense play-of-colour with an irregular, non-directional and polygonal pattern with crystallites of ~1 mm.
The opals are composed of self-organized and ordered monodisperse silica particles embedded in an organic polymer matrix.
It’s a lab-manufactured synthetic element comprising Polymer and Silica. Just like natural Opal is made of hydrated Silica. The use of the polymer in Aurora Opal means that it can balance the Opal and make it stable. Natural Opal can crack whenever it is used to make jewellery so extra care has to be used.
